I was playing football in the streets, martial arts, dancing and singing with my friends, writing bits of songs and copying our favorite hip hop artists. Art like dancing and singing are a major part of our traditions, and I grew up with a very rich cultural heritage and environnement. I have a diverse set of skills, such as dancing, slam and rap. My interests in dancing have shifted around hip hop and it’s many different aspects, like break dancing or krumping. I started to break dance when I was a teenager and I am also trained in acrobatic movements and traditional african dances. Now I’m trying to mix all of my different influences, like hip hop and traditional dances to create a unique ensemble for my art. At the age of twelve, me and few of my friends created a crew called B3K, and performed in local schools, community and social and cultural centers. In 2009, our group parted ways and I became a part of a dance duo called Jmo. We won several prizes and competitions such as « Big City Battle », the best performance trophy for the « 72H Hip Hop » competition, « Banlieues Ryhthmes Festival », and we were in the « Battle National» final contest three years in a row. We were also a lot into underground inter-school battles and performed throughout Senegal as well as internationally. In 2011, I started exploring the art of slam and poetic writing. With a few collectives like «Carrefour poétique d’Africultururban » filled with talended slam artists or « Daass xalima » at the Blaise Senghor sociocultural center in Dakar, I started to write and perform more and more. I was a final contestant of the « Ligue de Slam » national competition. I’m sometimes selling some of my texts to film productions or other performing artists. My songs and texts are often written in Wolof to denounce social injustices or inequalities and in order to be understood by the audience. I am slamming to improve our lives, to avoid being stuck in our ancestors' way of living. Often inspired by the Prophet Muhammad, I try to adapt his thoughts and religion to my generation to who I want to help bring another perspective with my writing. Written by: Feriel Gaye
