On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 4:41:03 a.m. JST, H3 Launch Vehicle No. 10 (H3-24L) lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima, Japan, carrying the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) spacecraft. I filmed the launch, from ignition to ascent, at Eminoe Observation Park, the public viewing site closest to the launch pad.
■ Launch Overview
・Date & time: Tuesday, October 20, 2026, 4:41:03 a.m. JST
・Launch site: Tanegashima Space Center, Yoshinobu Launch Complex, Pad 2
・Vehicle: H3 Launch Vehicle No. 10 (H3-24L: two LE-9 engines, four SRB-3 solid rocket boosters, long fairing)
・Payload: Martian Moons eXploration (MMX)
・Result: About 1 hour 11 minutes after liftoff, at around 5:52 a.m., MMX separated at an altitude of about 590 km and was successfully placed into a Mars transfer orbit
・Weather: Calm conditions under the Pacific high-pressure system allowed the launch to proceed on schedule
■ Highlights of H3 F10
・H3's first mission to send a spacecraft into interplanetary space
・The first time H3 reached Earth escape velocity (about 11.2 km/s)
・The second stage fired twice to send MMX on its way to Mars
・The first flight of the 24 configuration with the long fairing (H3-24L), completing the flight record of every H3 configuration
・The third consecutive success, following F6 and F9, after the failure of F8 in December 2025
・H3's first launch of a lunar or planetary probe, a role previously carried out by the H-IIA rocket, which retired in 2025
・The launch glow was seen across wide areas of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, with sightings reported even from the Kanto region. Clouds resembling noctilucent clouds were also observed after the launch
■ What Is MMX?
・A JAXA-led mission to explore Phobos and Deimos, the two moons of Mars
・MMX plans to land on Phobos, collect at least 10 g of surface material, and bring it back to Earth. If successful, it will be the world's first sample return from the Martian system
・The returned samples are expected to shed light on the origin of the Martian moons and the formation of the solar system
・The mission builds on technologies developed for Hayabusa and Hayabusa2
・An international mission with participation from NASA, CNES (France), DLR (Germany), ESA, and others
・The small rover IDEFIX, jointly developed by France and Germany, will be deployed on Phobos to study its surface
・Observations with ultra-high-definition 4K and 8K cameras are also planned
■ Upcoming Schedule (Planned)
・About 3 months of cruise while checking the performance of onboard instruments
・Around August 2027: Enter orbit around Mars
・About 3 years in the Martian system: observing Phobos, landing twice to collect samples, and observing Deimos
・2030: Depart the Martian system
・2031: Return to Earth, with the return capsule to be recovered in Australia
※The mission schedule is subject to change
■ Filming Location: Eminoe Observation Park
・A viewing site about 3 km north of the Yoshinobu Launch Complex at the Tanegashima Space Center
・The closest to the launch pad of the four designated viewing sites on the island
・Admission is by advance lottery, and visitors can feel the roar and vibration of the launch with their whole body
・Surrounded by coral reef coastline, the Tanegashima Space Center is often called "the most beautiful rocket launch site in the world"
■ Highlights of This Video
・The moment of ignition lighting up the pre-dawn darkness, and the H3 rocket climbing into the sky
・The ending looks back on the launch through photos, with the message "Good Luck, MMX / See you in 2031"
■ Equipment
・Main camera: Sony α7C II
・Lens: Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II (SEL70200GM2) + 2x teleconverter
・Fixed-angle camera: DJI Osmo Pocket 4 (also recorded the launch audio)
・Editing: DaVinci Resolve (60p)
Bon voyage, MMX. See you back on Earth in 2031.
