A Supply Sergeant's 9 Rules to Clear a Garage in One Weekend (And Keep It Clear)

Ever clear out the garage on a Saturday, haul three loads to the dump, buy a stack of clear bins, and then by spring the car is parked back out in the driveway? You did not lose your nerve, and you are not lazy. You just did the right jobs in the wrong order.
Most people run to the hardware store first and buy shelving and plastic bins before they have tossed a single thing. In the Army, I spent my career as a supply sergeant. In a supply room, you never build shelves for property you are about to turn in. You count first, cut second, and store last.
When you do it in that order, you can clear a full garage in one weekend without a paid junk hauler and without buying a stack of bins.
Here is what we walk through:
Why buying storage bins first guarantees your garage fills back up
Rule 1: Count before you store by pulling everything into groups on the driveway
Rule 2: The three piles rule and why "might need it someday" is costing you rent
Rule 3: Finding your local disposition service instead of letting good tools rot
Rule 4: Cutting the doubles out of your hand tool collection
Rule 5: Clearing the chemical shelf, from stale gasoline to frozen latex paint
Rule 6: Working in short stretches so fatigue does not ruin your judgment
Rule 7: Assigning one home per item, heavy low and light high, with nothing on the floor
Rule 8: The military shadow board method that tells you in one second what is missing
Rule 9: One in, one out, and the ten-minute monthly walk-through that keeps it clear
Go out to the garage and count your screwdrivers or your tape measures. Tell me in the comments below: how many doubles did you find hiding in those drawers?
I put sixty fixes like this into Army-Proof Your Home at https://raytolliver.com
