Afghanistan’s Forces Repel Taliban Offensive in Warduj District, Badakhshan – 2015

At 3 a.m. on 9 Mizan 1394 (1 October 2015), the Taliban launched an offensive against Afghan security force positions in Warduj district, Badakhshan Province. The positions were located in the mountainous areas of the district. The enemy’s attack advanced from the south of Warduj toward the north, beginning from the areas of Roshan Koh, Estarb, Ghachan, and Khashbin. The operation was led by Fasihuddin Fitrat, the Taliban’s shadow governor for Badakhshan at the time, and his deputy Amanuddin Mansoor, both of whom were from Warduj district. One of the most vulnerable positions on the security forces’ front line was Zo Hill, which was dominated by the heights of Roshan Koh and Ghachan. At the start of the assault, the Taliban used heavy weapons, including mortars and SPG-9 recoilless rifles, along with Dragunov snipers, to fire on the first-line posts of Afghan security forces. Enemy infantry, taking advantage of the terrain and the darkness of night, approached close to the posts and launched continuous assaults. However, each attack was repelled by the resistance of the security forces. The fighting continued until daylight. Despite being under heavy fire from enemy positions on the dominating heights with both light and heavy weapons, Afghan security forces put up determined resistance. Commander Hamid Saifi, Commander Habib Warduji, Commander Parwiz Safi, Commander Salem Rasouli, Commander Ziaullah (who was later martyred in Dasht-e Archi), and Commander Hayatullah (who was martyred during this operation) played key roles in repelling the Taliban assault.
