BEFORE I KNEW ITS NAME
Some lessons don’t come from classrooms.
They come from early mornings, dirty boots, livestock that still needs tending whether you feel like it or not, and older hands showing you how to finish what you start without ever making a speech about it.
This song comes from the time I spent at my grandparents’ house growing up.
Morning coffee on the front porch with Pawpaw. Long days helping with livestock and ranch work. Watching the ten o’clock news with Mawmaw. Then sitting in the back doorway before bed, counting airplanes moving across the night sky.
Back then, I thought I was just spending time with them.
I didn’t realize they were teaching me discipline, responsibility, patience, and what it meant to work until the job was done.
I learned all of that before I knew its name.
Some places become part of who you are long before you understand what they gave you.
