The Middle of Here | Documenting Life After God

Familiarity makes it easy to stop seeing the places right in front of us. The Middle of Here is a short visual essay about film photography, day trips, small towns, forgotten places, and the strange things you notice when you deliberately become unfamiliar with where you already are. I pack a few cameras, a couple rolls of film, and leave the familiar for a few hours. Not to find somewhere extraordinary, but to pay attention to what is already there: abandoned buildings, collapsing houses, roadside landscapes, rusting cars, small towns, and the remnants of lives that have moved on. The photographs become evidence. Evidence that I went somewhere, but also evidence that I was paying attention. This is a film photography project about place, memory, perspective, and finding something worth photographing in the middle of nowhere. I don't have to go somewhere interesting to see something interesting. I just have to become unfamiliar with where I already am.
