🇨🇭 SWITZERLAND IN WILD WEATHER – PART 3 🌫️ Welcome to Part 3 of our five-part scenic driving journey through Switzerland’s wild and constantly changing Alpine weather. In this chapter, we begin at the Furka car train loading station in Realp and travel through the Urseren Valley toward Hospental before climbing one of Switzerland’s most legendary mountain roads – the Gotthard Pass. But today, the mountains slowly disappear. 🌫️ INTO THE FOG The journey begins in Realp beneath heavy clouds. As we travel toward Hospental and start climbing higher into the Alps, visibility gradually becomes worse. The surrounding peaks disappear. The landscape fades. And eventually, the road itself seems to lead directly into the clouds. This is the Swiss Alps in a completely different mood. No blue skies. No perfect postcard weather. Just rock, mountain roads, low clouds and dense Alpine fog. 🚗 ROUTE Realp – Furka Car Train Station 🇨🇭 ↓ Urseren Valley ↓ Hospental ↓ Gotthard Pass Road ↓ Gotthard Pass – 2,106 m 🇨🇭 🚆 REALP & THE FURKA CAR TRAIN This drive begins at the Furka car train loading station in Realp. Realp lies in the canton of Uri at the western end of the Urseren Valley and is an important starting point for journeys toward the Furka region. From here, vehicles can also be transported by train through the Furka Base Tunnel toward Oberwald in the canton of Valais. For our Wild Weather journey, however, we turn back east through the valley toward Hospental. 🏔️ THE URSEREN VALLEY The road from Realp toward Hospental runs through the beautiful high Alpine landscape of the Urseren Valley. Surrounded by mountains, this valley connects several of Switzerland’s most famous Alpine routes. Realp provides access toward the Furka Pass, while Hospental is the junction for the legendary Gotthard Pass. 🌄 HOSPENTAL At Hospental, the journey changes completely. We leave the valley and begin climbing toward the Gotthard Pass. The road gains altitude quickly and the landscape becomes increasingly rocky and exposed. At the same time, the clouds become lower and thicker. With every kilometre, visibility decreases. 🌫️ GOTTHARD PASS The Gotthard Pass is one of the most famous mountain crossings in Switzerland. At approximately 2,106 metres above sea level, it has connected northern and southern Switzerland for centuries. Today, most long-distance traffic travels through the Gotthard road tunnel. But the mountain pass remains one of Switzerland’s great driving experiences. On a clear day, the route offers spectacular views across the surrounding mountains. Today is very different. Dense fog covers the upper section of the pass and transforms the landscape into an almost mysterious world of rock, road and cloud. The higher we climb, the less we can see.
