Many people keep their emergency funds in traditional savings accounts without realizing how much interest they may be leaving on the table. Banks count on inertia. The savings account you opened in college could be quietly costing you a vacation every year.
Last week I joined Steve McCarron and Tyrah Majors on ARC Seattle (@komonews ) talk about this — and a few other topics that are top of mind for a lot of people right now.
On a $20,000 emergency fund, the difference in annual interest between a traditional savings account and a high-yield savings account can be meaningful — potentially $700–$800 or more. Same money. Same liquidity. Same FDIC protection at an appropriately insured institution. The only difference is the account type.
We also discuss emergency fund runway planning and steps worth considering if a layoff feels like a real possibility.
