This is a WDNL (D-102) station “composite” aircheck featuring all of the weekday DJs from August 9, 1978. It begins with Doug Quick from 6-10 am, Bill “Boober” LaCombe from 10 am-3 pm, Mike James from 3 pm -7 pm, and Marc Phillips from 7 pm - Midnight. Reed Pence was the newscast anchor. The station used jingles from the 1977 WABC package offered by JAM Productions.
The station was automated using a Harris System 90 analog automation unit with 4 reel-to-reel decks, 2 time announce card decks, 1 stereo jingle cart player, 1 mono newscast cart player, 1 mono talk track cart player, and 2 mono carousels for commercials. Except for the period from 6 to 8 am, when Doug was using the automation.
Doug used the automation to play music and commercials as “live assist” from 6 am to 8:30 am and was on “talk-track from 8:30 to 10 am. Everyone else was on “talk-tracks” for the rest of the day. Of course, everyone had the option to go “live assist” at any time necessary. Newscasts were all pre-recorded, usually within 10 minutes of airing. When they weren’t recording, the DJs would turn their attention to other duties, like sales, commercial production, or station operations. Our GM, Joe Jackson, had a saying, “You can teach a jock to sell, but you can’t teach a salesperson how to jock.” That let staff members make more money because they did the work of two people at once, using automation as a tool, just as you would a cart machine for playing a commercial, or recorded music, for that matter.
The station program director, Marc Phillips, produced and edited this for sales demo use to show how WDNL sounded and to attract out-of-market advertisers and ad agencies.
