Siena is a historic city in central Tuscany, renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture and unique urban design. Unlike surrounding cities, it has maintained a nearly intact Gothic character dating from the 12th to the 14th century. The heart of the city is the Piazza del Campo, a central square distinguished by its fan or shell-like shape. The entire area slopes toward the town hall and is geometrically divided into nine segments, directly symbolizing the historic "Rule of Nine" that governed the city in the past. Twice a year, specifically on July 2nd and August 16th, this square hosts the Palio di Siena horse races. This event is far from a mere tourist attraction; it is a deeply rooted power and social ritual that forms the foundation of local administration and the identity of the inhabitants. In the race itself, ten selected city wards, known as contrade, compete against each other out of a total of seventeen. The contest is highly dynamic, lasting approximately ninety seconds and consisting of three laps on a track covered in tuff sand, with riders racing across the square bareback.
