How much money do you really need to retire comfortably? Americans say $1.46 million, but that "magic number" is an average of people's estimates, and it can't know what Social Security will pay you.
We work out one couple's real retirement number, line by line, and it comes out far lower, with a catch hiding in the first eight years.
Mike and Carol (an illustrative couple, both 62, with $750,000 saved) compare the Northwestern Mutual 2026 survey with what households really have (Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances 2025: a typical $257,000 for ages 65 to 74, among those with a retirement account) and what they really spend (BLS Consumer Expenditure data, the 80% replacement-rate rule of thumb, and the Elder Index cost of basic needs by state).
Then the math: Social Security covers their basics, so savings only fill the gap. We apply the 4% rule (William Bengen's rule of thumb, and his newer 4.7%), look at Fidelity's 2026 health care cost estimate ($185,500 per person) and long-term care costs, and find the twist: the bridge years before a delayed Social Security check can take almost half of the total they need.
HealthCare.gov open enrollment for 2027 plans: Nov 1, 2026 to Jan 15, 2027 (enroll by Dec 15 for Jan 1 coverage; some states run their own site).
