It can allow you to sound great soloing in many different styles including blues, rock, metal, funk, & jazz. However, many guitarists get stuck using the same box shape (Pattern #1), unable to fully explore the rest of the fretboard when soloing. The few that do break away end up having to memorize a bunch of different patterns to make it work...
