Avon Volunteer Fire Department 9/11 Memorial Ceremony (2026)

The Avon Volunteer Fire Department held its 24th annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on September 11, 2026, honoring those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The service marked 25 years since nearly 3,000 lives were lost in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Held at Avon Volunteer Fire Department Company 1, the memorial service included the National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, and the Firefighter’s Prayer. Guest speakers John Carmon and Carmine Centrella offered September 11 reflections drawing from their experiences following the attacks. Carmon helped organize volunteers assisting with recovery efforts in New York and spoke nationally about the wave of loss experienced across the country. Centrella responded to Ground Zero with members of the UConn Fire Department Technical Rescue Team and participated in rescue and recovery efforts. The service also included poetry and musical tributes from retired Avon Police Officer Sue Kassey, the Sweet Adelines, the Avon High School Choral Singers, singer Nathaniel Hintz, saxophonist Mike Thrower, and bagpipers.
