You break your leg on a limestone slope. The group is fifty paces ahead. Hyenas are calling from the trees. There is no surgeon, no X-ray, and no ambulance coming over the ridge.
So how did ancient humans survive a broken leg?
In this video, we follow one injured hunter-gatherer through the real evidence: why a broken thigh bone can silently bleed more than you can see, why the first six weeks of bone repair were the real trap, and what the skeletons of Stone Age and Bronze Age people reveal about who kept them alive. From the oldest preserved splints at Naga-ed-Der in Egypt, to a twisted but healed femur at Huiyaotian in China, to Man Bac Burial 9, a young man in Vietnam who lived roughly ten years with paralysis, to Shanidar 1, the Neanderthal who survived injuries that should have ended his life. We also look at the toothless skull at Dmanisi, the infected fracture at Pontecagnano, and the healed hip of a woman at Tombos.
If you have ever wondered how early humans survived injury without modern medicine, what archaeologists can and cannot prove about prehistoric care, or how a broken bone can reveal the story of a whole community, this one is for you.
