How Florida's Scariest Subway Ride Became a Ghost of Itself: Universal Studios, Orlando
Orlando became famous for its massive theme parks and unforgettable attractions, but one unusual ride promised visitors an experience that was unlike anything else. Earthquake: The Big One at Universal Studios Florida brought the terrifying power of an earthquake to life, shaking guests through an elaborate disaster simulation inspired by Hollywood special effects.
When Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990, the attraction became part of the park’s original lineup. Visitors stepped aboard a subway car and experienced a simulated earthquake complete with collapsing structures, shaking platforms, fire, and rushing water. It was designed to show audiences how Hollywood created spectacular disaster scenes.
But as Universal continued to evolve, the original Earthquake experience eventually came to an end. The attraction was reworked into Disaster! in 2008 before closing in 2015 to make way for new experiences.
In this video, we explore the rise and fall of Earthquake in Orlando — how this groundbreaking attraction terrified and amazed visitors, what made its effects so memorable, why the original experience disappeared, and what replaced it.
This is the story of a lost piece of Universal Studios history and one of the unforgettable attractions that helped define Orlando’s early theme-park era.
