Today, on International Sloth Day 2026, we have the announcement we have been working toward for years. U.S. Representatives Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-FL) and Laurel M. Lee (R-FL) have introduced the Stopping Legalized Organized Trafficking and Harm to Sloths Act of 2026, the SLOTHS Act, a bipartisan federal bill that would permanently end the importation of wild-caught sloths into the United States. The Sloth Protection Alliance, a collaboration between The Sloth Institute and The Sloth Conservation Foundation, worked side by side with lawmakers to make this happen. Join Sam Trull and Dr. Rebecca Cliffe as they break down what the bill does, why it matters, and what comes next. 58 sloths died at Sloth World Orlando. Between 2011 and 2021, more than 1,100 wild-caught sloths were legally imported into the United States. Today, we take the most important step yet toward making sure this never happens again. ABOUT THE SLOTHS ACT The SLOTHS Act would prohibit the importation of sloths into the United States for commercial purposes, with narrow exceptions for scientific research and AZA-accredited breeding programs. Violations carry civil penalties of up to $20,000 and criminal fines of up to $100,000. ABOUT THE SLOTH PROTECTION ALLIANCE The Sloth Protection Alliance is a collaboration between The Sloth Conservation Foundation and The Sloth Institute, combining decades of scientific expertise in wild sloth research, rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation policy to end the commercial sloth trade in the United States. #SLOTHSAct #InternationalSlothDay #SlothProtectionAlliance #EndTheSlothTrade #WildSlothImportBan #SlothConservation #TheSlothInstitute #SlothConservationFoundation #NotAPet #BornToBeWild
