"No Duke Will Look at You," Her Mother Sneered — Then the Richest Duke in England Asked Her to Dance

Clara Ashford had spent three years being told that her mind was the only thing about her worth mentioning — and it was always said as an apology. Her mother said it to guests, in that bright voice women use when they are explaining a disappointment. No duke will ever look twice at you, she said, one evening, in front of the whole room. The room agreed with her. Clara had long since stopped arguing about it. Then the Duke of Ravenscroft walked the entire length of a crowded ballroom, past every young lady who had been arranged into his path, and stopped in front of the woman everybody present had already written off. He had not come to dance. He had come because his brother was dead, because nobody believed it was anything but an accident, and because there was a letter in his pocket that no one in England could read except the unmarriageable girl at the edge of the room. What follows is a story about a woman whose cleverness had only ever cost her, a man who needed exactly that and nothing else, and a truth that a great many respectable people had spent a year making certain nobody would look for. A tender Regency tale of a woman society had finished with, and the evening somebody crossed a whole room to reach her. Sit back, relax, and let this story carry you to the candlelit ballrooms of old England. 💬 Tell us in the comments: which city are you watching from, and how did Clara's story make you feel?
