The observable universe measures ninety-three billion light-years across. The universe is only thirteen point eight billion years old. Both numbers are correct, and that shouldn't be possible. This documentary builds the size of the universe from the ground up, one scale model at a time. We start with a ping pong ball in your hand and a grain of sand fourteen feet away, walk to the nearest star, cross our own galaxy, and end at the oldest light anyone will ever detect. Along the way we take the contradiction seriously: how can we see something forty-six billion light-years away when light has only been traveling for thirteen point eight billion years? Three explanations get tested. The age being wrong. Something moving faster than light. A bookkeeping trick with two kinds of distance. All three fail, and the reason they fail is the interesting part. We also cover the night in 1923 when a single pulsing star turned our galaxy into one among billions, the reason the edge of the observable universe is a moment rather than a place, and why the number everyone quotes isn't the size of the universe at all — it's the size of the window we happen to be looking through, and that window is closing. 00:00:00 A Mind's Limit 00:01:56 What We'll Build 00:02:50 A Ping Pong Sun 00:06:29 The Impossible Number 00:09:55 Is Time Wrong 00:13:21 Faster Than Light 00:16:47 Only Bookkeeping 00:19:53 The Broken Ruler 00:23:08 October 1923 00:27:01 Space Itself Stretches 00:31:37 Not A Wall 00:35:13 Two Hundred Fifty 00:39:45 The Last Witnesses 00:43:14 Back To Window 00:45:10 What Comes Next how big is the universe, observable universe size, 93 billion light years, universe scale comparison, cosmic microwave background explained, expansion of space, Edwin Hubble Andromeda 1923, cosmic event horizon, universe age 13.8 billion years, space documentary, cosmology explained, size of the cosmos #observableuniverse #cosmicscale #cosmology #astrophysics #spacedocumentary ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: The images used in this video are for illustrative purposes only.
