UPDATE (Oct. 23, 2026): The jury found Miguel Salguero-Olivares guilty on all counts, including first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. His lawyers have filed an appeal. This video covers testimony and rulings from before the verdict.
Before the first witness testified in the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial, Durham County Superior Court Judge Keith O. Gregory had to answer one question: could the defense suggest to the jury that someone else did it? This is the Sept. 21, 2026 hearing that decided it — the judge's questions, both sides' arguments and the ruling, in their own words — with a narrated breakdown of the two-prong rule North Carolina uses for this kind of evidence (N.C.G.S. § 8C-1, Rule 401; State v. May, 354 N.C. 172 (2001)) and the U.S. Supreme Court case the defense relied on (Holmes v. South Carolina, 547 U.S. 319 (2006)).
Faith Hedgepeth, 19, was killed in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Sept. 7, 2012. Miguel Salguero-Olivares, arrested in 2021, was charged with first-degree murder and related charges (as reported). He pleaded not guilty (as reported) and was presumed innocent at trial. Her roommate has not been charged with any crime. A pretrial ruling is not a verdict.
