In addition to new ships, the representation is now completely in 3D for both ship and trade simulation. The trade simulation is complemented by a ship trainer with many ports and training areas. Originally released for the Amiga, it is now available for PCs on Steam. Tramp Shipping The transport of goods by sea is regulated by international agreements and treaties between individual countries. Approximately 80% of the goods to be transported between two countries, known as cargo volume, are transported by ships flying the flags of the respective countries. The remaining 20% of the cargo volume is open to competition, and ships flying any flag can bid for this cargo. These ships are known as tramp ships and are mostly equipped to transport a wide variety of goods. Ports of Call focuses on this area of maritime shipping. Whether a tramp ship owner makes a profit depends partly on the laws, regulations, and subsidies of their country and partly on simple supply and demand. For example, if there is a good coffee harvest, coffee prices drop, and because there is a lot of coffee to move, freight rates rise. If many shipowners then rush into the lucrative coffee transport business, the supply of shipping space increases, and freight rates drop again. If the coffee harvest is poor, freight rates drop even though coffee prices rise because there is now a lot of shipping space and little coffee to transport. In times of extremely poor yields, some shipowners are even forced to lay up their ships, meaning they take the ships out of operation. Ships cannot be sold because ship prices fall (supply and demand), and it is not worthwhile to operate the ships because the earnings do not cover the costs.
