Islamic Perspective on Music
The ruling on music in Islam is a matter of scholarly difference, with evidence often interpreted in different ways.
Some scholars consider music prohibited based on a hadith reported in Sahih al-Bukhari, where the Prophet ﷺ mentioned people who would make musical instruments lawful. They also refer to the Qur’an (31:6), where “idle talk” (lahw al-hadith) is interpreted by some early scholars as music that distracts from the remembrance of Allah.
On the other hand, other scholars allow certain forms of music based on authentic narrations in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, where singing was permitted during Eid in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ. Additionally, the use of the daff (simple drum) is allowed in celebrations such as weddings.
In conclusion, the ruling on music is not entirely absolute. It can be:
Permissible, if it contains good content and does not lead to negligence
Disliked or prohibited, if it promotes immorality or distracts from religious duties
The key principle is that Islam evaluates not only the form, but also the content and its impact on the heart and behavior.
