Saturday road trip! Dad drives the family to the Mississippi River at Hastings, Minnesota, where the river has a big step in it - a dam - and a lock beside it. Avery wants to see a boat go up the step. She is sure a crane lifts it; she even drew the crane. Gus is sure a giant does it. They wait at the railing a long, long time. Then a little white boat comes up the low side, goes into the long concrete box, and the gates shut behind it. The water starts to swirl. Avery holds her hand flat over the railing like a line in the air, and the captain's cap comes up to meet it. There is no crane anywhere. What children find out: nobody lifts the boat. Water from the high part of the river runs into the box all by itself, and the boat floats up with it. Back home, a dishpan and a cup of water at a time do it again - until Spec drinks the lock. For grown-ups: a real place you can visit (the Lock and Dam No. 2 viewing area in Hastings), and a trip told with car seats buckled, the toolbelt in the bag for the ride, and a grown-up's hand on every child at the water.
