The Southwest Virginia Museum was entrusted to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1946 by C. Bascom Slemp, a member of the U.S Congress and private secretary to President Calvin Coolidge. It holds many artifacts, from Daniel Boone’s movement through the Wilderness Road into the Cumberland Gap in 1775 to the coal boom of the 1890s.
