What do you do when an uncomfortable emotion shows up? Many of us try to distract ourselves, push it away or numb it by scrolling, procrastinating, overeating or binge-watching. Unfortunately, avoiding an emotion does not help us move through it.
In this episode, I walk you through a practical process for allowing and processing difficult emotions such as anxiety, anger, shame, sadness and loneliness.
You will learn:
How to name the emotion you are experiencing
How to notice where it appears in your body
Why resisting an emotion can make it feel more powerful
How breathing and open body posture can help you allow the feeling
Why practicing with smaller emotions can prepare you for harder moments
You do not have to be afraid of your feelings. When you learn that you can experience discomfort without immediately reacting to it or escaping it, you have more freedom to take the next step you truly want to take.
This process was inspired in part by the work of Jennifer Shannon.
If an emotion feels overwhelming or is connected to trauma, consider working through it with a qualified mental health professional.
