10 Roman Emperors Murdered By Their Own Bodyguards

#RomanHistory #AncientRome #History Did you know that the Praetorian Guard — the elite soldiers sworn to protect the Roman emperor — once killed a ruler, chose his successor, and got paid for both in a single afternoon? Or that they later auctioned the entire Roman Empire to the highest bidder, selling the throne to a senator for 25,000 sesterces a man while the murdered emperor's body still lay in the palace? For over two centuries, the men closest to the emperor — his bodyguards, his officers, his chamberlain, even the mistress who poured his wine — were the ones most likely to kill him. This is a countdown of 10 Roman emperors murdered by their own protectors: who they were, why the men sworn to defend them turned their swords around, and how each emperor met his end. From Caligula taunting the wrong officer to Aurelian, the restorer of the whole empire, killed over a forged list by frightened soldiers who never realised they'd been tricked. ⏱ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 — No. 10 Caligula, 41 A-D 2:39 — No. 9 Galba, 69 A-D 11:03 — No. 8 Pertinax, The Reformer 16:06 — No. 7 Didius Julianus Buys Empire 21:29 — No. 6 Geta, Killed In Mother's Arms 25:49 — No. 5 Caracalla, Killed Roadside 30:31 — No. 4 Elagabalus, Boy Emperor 34:53 — No. 3 Balbinus And Pupienus 49:48 — No. 2 Commodus, Betrayed By All 57:57 — No. 1 Aurelian, Killed By A Lie 🔔 Subscribe for more forgotten Roman history and the brutal truth behind the empire's most powerful men.
