Of Scylla, she tells him: “No ship can pass her without loss of men.” And of Charybdis: “Thrice a day she spews it forth, and thrice she sucks it down.” — Homer, The Odyssey, Book XII, translation by A. T. Murray. In Homer's poem, Odysseus learns that there is no way to completely avoid danger. Circe advises him to sail closer to Scylla rather than risk the greater destruction of Charybdis. When the moment comes, Scylla reaches down from the cliffs and takes six of Odysseus' men, while the ship manages to escape the deadly passage.
