In 1958, the Bendix Electrojector promised to revolutionize American automobiles with electronic fuel injection decades before the technology became standard. But why did this groundbreaking invention disappear almost as quickly as it arrived? Discover the remarkable story of the fuel injection system that was simply too far ahead of its time.
Developed by Bendix Aviation, the Electrojector introduced electronically controlled fuel delivery when carburetors still dominated American roads. Chrysler embraced the technology for its 1958 performance cars, including the Chrysler 300D, DeSoto Adventurer, Dodge D-500, and Plymouth Fury.
With transistor-based electronic controls, electromagnetic injectors, and precise fuel metering, the Bendix Electrojector offered a glimpse of the future. Unfortunately, unreliable components, difficult cold starts, expensive repairs, and limited service expertise turned this engineering breakthrough into a commercial failure.
Only about 35 cars reached customers before nearly every system was removed and replaced with conventional carburetors. Yet the technology's underlying principles survived, influencing Bosch D-Jetronic and helping shape the electronic fuel injection systems used in modern automobiles.
In this documentary, we explore how the Bendix Electrojector worked, why Chrysler abandoned it, what happened to the surviving systems, and how a forgotten 1950s invention helped transform automotive engineering.
