Anthropic bought millions of physical books, removed their bindings, scanned the pages and discarded the originals to create AI training data. This video explains Project Panama, why older books are valuable to AI companies, and how the courts treated Anthropic's purchased and pirated collections differently.
The court accepted the conversion of purchased books into a private digital library as fair use. A separate library built from pirated copies led to a $1.5 billion settlement. I cover the legal distinction, the growing bulk-book market, and the concern from rare-book dealers that obscure editions could disappear before anyone records their provenance. Reports about the project do not establish a campaign against priceless first editions, but they raise practical questions about preservation, access and what happens when a private company creates a huge digital library that the public cannot inspect.

KEY POINTS
• Anthropic created a searchable training library from purchased physical books.
• Purchased books and pirated copies received different legal treatment.
• Older books are useful because they predate the flood of AI-generated web text.
• Bulk buying can remove obscure editions from an already thin physical market.
• Digital preservation has limited public value when access stays private.
