Phillies vs Rays: Cristopher Sanchez struck out 10 over seven innings and the Phillies still lost 2-0. The pitching was not the problem. This offense cannot move a runner off first base. Philadelphia dropped the opener of a three-game set to Tampa Bay 2-0, managing four hits, all singles, and going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Cristopher Sanchez was excellent after the first two innings and struck out the last seven batters he faced. Both Rays runs came off one pitch, and the Phillies' real problem is older than one night. • Dead last in MLB in batting average with a man on first base, .233 and a .694 OPS on the season -- 27th in OPS, not last, and the difference matters • 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position over three games, but 2nd in MLB in RISP OPS across the full season -- a slump, not an identity • Expected hits 6.9, actual hits 4: the contact was worth about seven hits and produced four • Cristopher Sanchez: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 10 K on 100 pitches, with the changeup at a 46% miss rate and zero hits allowed on it • The sinker is the leak -- a .330 average and .849 OPS against it this season, and the Rays swung at it 23 times without a single miss • Trea Turner chased all four out-of-zone fastballs from Freddy Peralta against a 34% season rate Is the man-on-first problem a hitting approach issue or a roster construction one?
