The Bangkok to Sungai Kolok train crosses nearly 1,200 kilometres of Thailand, tracking south to the Malaysian border. Steel wheels, changing coastal light, and the interior rhythm of 2nd class berths and 1st class cabins define the longest continuous rail corridor in the country.
📍 GETTING THERE
From: Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, Bangkok
By: State Railway of Thailand Special Express No. 37 or Rapid No. 171, approx 19 to 21 hours, approx 900 to 1,800 THB depending on class
📖 CONTEXT: THE SOUTHERN MAIN LINE
The Southern Line of the State Railway of Thailand remains one of mainland Southeast Asia's critical infrastructural spines. Originating at Bangkok's northern rail terminal, the tracks cut through the central plains, hug the narrow Isthmus of Kra, and run along the lower peninsula before terminating at the border district of Sungai Kolok in Narathiwat Province.
Onboard accommodations range from open-plan, fan-cooled carriages to air-conditioned second-class sleepers that convert from day seats into bunk beds, as well as private first-class compartments equipped with washbasins. The route functions as both long-distance public transit and an observational survey of Thailand's changing regional topography, moving from urban concrete to limestone karsts, rubber plantations, and coastal borderlands.
