The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College: Where Students Train with Animals!

What happens when a zoo is also a classroom? Join me at The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College, where students aren't just learning about animals—they're actually working with them! During my visit, I got to see keeper trainees working with a macaw and vulture, demonstrating learned behaviors with a lion and serval, and interacting with visitors during animal presentations featuring a hornbill, porcupine, hedgehog and owl. I also got to see a singing gibbon, a savanna monitor, and the zoo's impressive new tiger habitat. What really stood out was the amount of interaction between the keeper trainees, the animals and the visitors. The presentations were a particular highlight and demonstrated just how important the teaching mission is to this unique zoo.
