The Tooro Kingdom has entered another historic and emotional chapter following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. On Friday, September 4, the remains of the late King Oyo returned to Uganda, with President Yoweri Museveni receiving the body at Entebbe before the royal family continued the final journey to Tooro. Queen Mother Best Kemigisa was overwhelmed with grief and broke down in tears as she confronted the loss of her son. Thousands of mourners also gathered along the route to pay their final respects to the fallen monarch. At the same time, a major development in the Tooro succession has emerged. The Royal Succession Committee reportedly selected George Desmond Kamurasi as the person to succeed King Oyo. Reports indicate that 18 of the 21 committee members attended the meeting, with 15 voting in favour of Kamurasi. The succession comes amid days of uncertainty and debate over who should inherit the Tooro throne, particularly following claims that the late King Oyo left behind a young son who could potentially be an heir. There have also been questions about the role of the government and President Yoweri Museveni in the succession process. However, the latest reports indicate that President Museveni supports the committee's choice of George Kamurasi, while Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has also reportedly endorsed the decision. The formal public announcement of the new Omukama is expected to follow Tooro customs and take place after the burial of King Oyo.
