This week on I Can Fix That, we’re taking a huge step forward in Betty’s mobile home kitchen renovation by installing the laminate on our almost 12-foot-long DIY countertop! In the last episode, we built the particle-board countertop substrate from scratch to fit Betty’s new kitchen base cabinets. Now it’s time to turn that homemade countertop into the finished surface we’ve been working toward. We walk through many of the basic steps of installing laminate, including applying contact cement to both the countertop and the back of the laminate, carefully positioning the sheet, rolling it down for a solid bond, and using a router with a laminate-trimming bit to finish the edges and bring everything to its final shape. With a countertop this long, this definitely wasn’t a one-person job! It took several of us to handle the finished top and carefully move it from our work area into the kitchen before getting it positioned on the new base cabinets. We also spend some time finishing up the exposed ends of the cabinets so they’ll be ready for primer and paint as the kitchen continues coming together. Throughout the video we use a combination of explanation, close-up shots, and time-lapse footage to show as much of the process as possible. If you’ve ever wondered whether you can build and laminate your own countertop instead of purchasing a finished one, hopefully this project gives you some ideas and shows what’s involved. Betty’s 1977 Fleetwood mobile home renovation continues one project at a time, and seeing this kitchen finally start looking like a real kitchen makes all the work worth it.
