The narrative takes place in an alternate version of the year 2006, in a remote French village surrounded by a medieval-style castle and an unsettling atmosphere that resembles nineteenth-century Europe. The conflict began approximately 300 years earlier. Auguste, an exceptionally powerful vampire who had grown tired of his immortality, wanted to find a way to end his own existence. To accomplish this, he created two vampire hunters named Michel and Albert, intending for them to become powerful enough to kill him. However, when Auguste began to fear death, he withdrew the powers he had given his creations and abandoned his original desire. Michel and Albert nevertheless continued their mission, eventually becoming hunters dedicated to destroying the vampire lord and his followers. Three centuries later, they discover that Auguste is hiding near a small French village. The area has become infested with vampires, and its inhabitants are being transformed by a parasitic growth known as Sarcoma. Michel and Albert arrive to investigate the outbreak and eliminate the creatures responsible. The game is an on-rails light-gun shooter designed for one or two players. The camera moves automatically through the village, castle grounds, and interior environments, while players use dedicated gun controllers to shoot enemies appearing on the screen. Weapon has an eight-round magazine, giving it a larger ammunition capacity than the six-shot weapons commonly associated with Sega's earlier light-gun shooters. Combat emphasizes both speed and precision. Enemies often approach quickly, reflecting their supernatural abilities, and many have visible health gauges when targeted. Their weak points are marked on their bodies, allowing players to inflict damage more effectively by aiming at the highlighted areas. Another distinctive feature is the ability to destroy weapons and projectiles thrown or fired by enemies. Rather than concentrating exclusively on the enemies themselves, players must sometimes shoot incoming objects before they reach the screen's foreground. The game also includes hidden objects scattered throughout the environments. Destroying these objects can reveal life-restoring items and score bonuses. The bonus collectibles include garlic, holy water, silver coins, golden skulls, and even watermelons. Extra-life items increase the player's remaining lives. The life system is straightforward: players lose a life when struck by enemy attacks. Players can continue after a game over by inserting the required credits. During a solo session, a second player can also join an ongoing game by inserting the required credit. This allows cooperative play to begin even after the first player has already started the campaign. One of the most important gameplay features is the ability to save villagers who are being transformed into vampires. Rather than simply shooting the attacking enemy or the civilian, players must aim at the parasitic growth attached to the victim. This growth is known as Sarcoma and represents the infection responsible for turning humans into vampires. It is the specific target players must destroy to save the person. Accuracy is essential because hitting the villager instead of the parasite causes them to transform into a hostile vampire. The newly transformed villager then attacks the players, adding another enemy to the encounter. Successfully rescuing villagers can produce useful rewards. Saving enough people and performing the correct actions can also influence the routes available through portions of the campaign. Boss encounters are one of the game's defining features. Unlike many rail shooters in which a boss appears only at the end of a stage, Vampire Night allows major enemies to arrive near the beginning or middle of a chapter. Players may defeat a boss encounter and then continue fighting regular enemies before facing another confrontation. Each major boss has a health gauge, allowing players to monitor how much damage remains before the creature is defeated. A second indicator, known as the Cancel Gauge, appears when certain bosses prepare to launch an attack. The objective is to shoot the boss rapidly enough to reduce the Cancel Gauge to zero before its attack connects. Successfully depleting the gauge interrupts the attack and prevents the incoming damage. Failure to destroy it in time allows the boss to complete its attack and harm the player. This system gives players a clear visual indication of how close they are to stopping an enemy's attack. It also makes accurate rapid shooting especially important during boss battles, since simply dealing damage to the creature is not always enough to avoid taking a hit. The campaign consists of six chapters, each built around a distinct environmental theme. The stages gradually leading the hunters toward Auguste.
