A new GLP-1 study raises a bigger question about what the general public actually understands about these medications. Researchers asked people what GLP-1 they were taking, then had them upload a photo of the actual product. Among participants identified as using compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide, many described themselves as taking branded medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound. Now, if you follow On The Pen, you probably already understand the difference between branded and compounded medications. But most people do not spend their days reading FDA documents, clinical trials, pharmacy regulations and GLP-1 news. So what happens when the average person sees an ad for semaglutide or tirzepatide? Do they understand that a compounded formulation is a different product from Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound? Do they know that some compounded formulations may include additional ingredients like B vitamins or glycine? And most importantly, who is responsible for making sure they understand exactly what they are being prescribed? Today on On The Pen Live, we’re digging into what this study found, what it does and does not prove, and whether it points to a larger transparency and communication problem in the rapidly growing GLP-1 market. I want to hear from this community too, because many of you understand this space better than the average consumer. What do you think the general public actually understands about compounded GLP-1 medications?
