In the 12th century, King Anantavarman Chodaganga Dev commissioned the grand stone temple, giving life to the world’s largest traditional kitchen. Puri was never born as a commercial trading port or a political fort; it grew organically around that sacred kitchen as cooks, craftsmen, and sevaks settled around the temple walls, turning small neighborhoods into an entire living city. We also uncover the geography and sacred names that define this land—from Shankha Kshetra, shaped like a divine conch shell, to Neelachal and Shrikhetra—before the streets open back up to the vast ocean. Sitting alone on the wet sea sand on my final morning, watching the clouds race across the sky and the tides erase every footprint, one truth became clear: The true soul of Puri isn't just its coastline, its waves, or its geography.
