On the Southern Railway’s demanding main lines, where tight weight limits met heavy boat trains and prestige expresses, one locomotive class was built to do what others could not: the Lord Nelson class.
Designed under Richard Maunsell and built at Eastleigh Works between 1926 and 1929, the Lord Nelsons were the Southern Railway’s most powerful 4-6-0 steam locomotives. With four cylinders, high-tensile components, a distinctive divided drive, and a reputation for both strength and difficulty, these engines became some of the most ambitious machines ever to run on the Southern.
But their story was never simple.
In this documentary, we explore the rise, performance, problems, and legacy of the Lord Nelson class. Built for the heavy Continental boat trains and elite express passenger work, these locomotives promised exceptional power within strict route restrictions. Yet their long fireboxes, complex draughting, and demanding handling meant that their finest performances depended on crews who truly understood them.
🔍 What you’ll learn:
Why the Southern Railway needed a new heavy express locomotive
How Maunsell designed powerful engines within strict weight limits
Why the Lord Nelsons were admired, criticised, and difficult to master
How modifications improved their performance over time
Why the arrival of Bulleid’s Pacifics changed their place on the Southern
How 850 Lord Nelson became the only surviving member of the class
From their early years on prestigious boat trains to their later service under British Railways, the Lord Nelson class stood as both a technical achievement and a reminder of the compromises behind steam locomotive design. Powerful, distinctive, and sometimes unforgiving, they remain one of the most fascinating express locomotive classes in British railway history.
