S03E06 The language I almost lost: Who Decides Which Language Matters

What does it really mean to grow up bilingual — and how much do the people and society around you shape the way you see your own languages? In this episode, I talk with my friend Yann, who grew up in France speaking both French and Portuguese. We explore his experience of growing up with two languages, the attitudes he encountered around speaking a language other than French, and how those experiences influenced his relationship with Portuguese over the years. We also talk about what can make a language feel less important at one point in your life, and what can later make you rediscover its value and meaning. A conversation about language, identity, family, belonging, and the sometimes unexpected ways our surroundings shape the languages we carry with us.
