Growing older is unavoidable. But becoming mentally old, disconnected, passive, and uninterested in life is not necessarily the same thing.
In this Human Code episode, we explore 6 hobbies that can help you stay young as you grow older, viewed through the practical wisdom of Stoicism. This isn't about pretending aging doesn't exist or trying to look twenty-five forever. It's about protecting something deeper: your curiosity, movement, creativity, purpose, adaptability, and connection to life.
The Stoics understood that we cannot control the passage of time, but we can influence how we use the time that remains. Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus repeatedly returned to principles of practice, acceptance, discipline, learning, and focusing our energy on what remains within our control.
This video explores six surprisingly simple hobbies:
Walking — to keep yourself physically engaged with the world rather than allowing your world to become unnecessarily smaller.
Reading — to protect curiosity and remain teachable, because one of the fastest ways for the mind to grow old is to believe it already knows enough.
Gardening — to stay connected to patience, growth, anticipation, and the Stoic distinction between what you can influence and what you cannot control.
Learning a new skill — to remain willing to become a beginner. Whether it's a language, chess, photography, painting, cooking, music, or technology, learning reminds you that your identity is never completely finished.
Creating something — to stop becoming only a consumer of other people's lives. Write. Paint. Cook. Build. Photograph. Restore. Make something simply because creating keeps you participating.
And finally, meaningful social activity — because staying connected to other people, contributing what you know, volunteering, mentoring, joining groups, and maintaining genuine human relationships can keep your world open as life changes.
The deeper lesson is simple: these hobbies do not literally make you younger. They keep you engaged. You cannot stop the calendar, prevent every physical change, or preserve every ability forever. But you can continue participating in your own life.
As the video puts it:
“The goal is not to remain twenty-five. The goal is to remain alive to your own life.”
Growing older does not mean surrendering curiosity. It does not mean surrendering creativity, friendship, learning, movement, or your interest in tomorrow. Time will take certain things eventually. Don't voluntarily hand it things it hasn't asked for yet.
