IS THE YORÙBÁ LANGUAGE DYING? | Why Young Yorùbá People Don’t Speak Yorùbá
“I understand Yoruba, but I can’t speak it.”
If you’ve heard that sentence before, this episode is for you.
Yorùbá is one of the major indigenous languages of Nigeria, with a rich history, literature, oral tradition, proverbs, songs and cultural knowledge embedded within it.
Yet, increasingly, many young Yorùbá people can understand the language but struggle to speak it.
So what happened?
Is English taking over?
Are parents responsible?
Is the education system part of the problem?
Has social media changed the way we communicate?
Or did we, as a society, somehow teach our children that speaking Yoruba was less sophisticated?
In this episode of Moments with Omidan, we explore the uncomfortable conversation around Yoruba language, identity and cultural preservation.
Because this isn’t about saying English is bad.
It isn’t about blaming young people.
And it certainly isn’t about saying you are “less Yoruba” because you don’t speak the language.
It is about asking a bigger question:
If we don’t speak our language, who will?
Watch till the end and tell me in the comments:
Can you speak Yoruba fluently?
Or are you one of those people who understands everything but replies in English?
