I Returned to Huangshan After 25 Years — And Found More Than a Mountain

Twenty-five years ago, I visited Huangshan Mountain in China for the first time with my parents. This summer, I returned — to the same mountain, but a very different journey. From there, we entered through Huangshan’s East Gate, traveled deep into the mountains, spent a night above the clouds, and descended into the dramatic Western Sea Grand Canyon. But this journey gradually became about more than the scenery. I met the traditional mountain porters who still carry supplies between cable car stations and hotels, and began to see the invisible work behind life on Huangshan. After leaving the mountain, we continued into the historic region of Huizhou, visiting Xixinan Village, where everyday life still unfolds among forests and streams, before spending the night in Tangmo Village. There, a traditional fish lantern celebration transformed the ancient village into a night of lanterns, fireworks, music, and celebration — a reminder that tradition does not have to remain frozen in the past to survive. Returning after 25 years made me realize that Huangshan is not only about peaks, clouds, and spectacular landscapes. It is also about the people who work here, the villages that surround it, the traditions that continue to evolve, and the memories we leave behind.
