The last customer leaves, the sign hums over the wet street, and she keeps the booth by the kitchen light until morning finds her. Tonight at Smoke & Satin: original slow blues and soul ballads about ordinary days that quietly turn into something you can carry, three flowers in paper, a key under the flower pot, a bus ticket with no return and the first tap of morning light. Deep smoky female vocals, felt piano, hollow-body guitar, upright bass, brushed drums and a muted trumpet, recorded in the room tone of a 1957 dance hall. Continuous, no talking, made to be left playing. These are new compositions inspired by the era of Etta James, not recordings by that artist.
