You might be experiencing bedtime procrastination; delaying sleep even when you have the time and opportunity to go to bed. In this video, Aparupa, founder and clinical psychologist at Upahya, explores why putting your phone down can feel so difficult when bedtime is finally your time. Often called “revenge bedtime procrastination”, this experience can involve trying to reclaim leisure, freedom or connection after a day filled with work and responsibilities. But that explanation doesn’t fit everyone and the research term “bedtime procrastination” describes the behaviour more broadly. In this video, we explore: • What bedtime procrastination means • Why late-night scrolling can feel like reclaiming your day • How emotions, unmet needs, and phone habits may play a role • What research says about bedtime procrastination and sleep • Practical experiments, including protecting leisure time and putting your phone away before bed • How delaying bedtime differs from being unable to fall asleep A useful place to start: What am I getting at midnight that I’m missing during the rest of my day?
