In 1975, a young Kodak engineer built the world's first self-contained digital camera. It was the size of a toaster, recorded a 0.01-megapixel image onto a cassette tape — and Kodak decided to keep it quiet.
This is the story of how the company that invented the digital camera was destroyed by it. From George Eastman's "You press the button, we do the rest" and the one-dollar Brownie, to Steven Sasson's homemade prototype, a 1981 warning that gave Kodak about ten years to prepare, the rise of the smartphone, the 2012 bankruptcy — and a photo app with thirteen employees that sold for a billion dollars in the very same year.
In this documentary you will learn:
• how George Eastman turned photography into a money machine built on film
• how Steven Sasson built the first digital camera from spare parts in 1975
• why Kodak's managers asked him not to talk about it
• what the 1981 warning predicted — and what Kodak did with it
• why Kodak could build great digital cameras but still lost the digital age
• what the "innovator's dilemma" means for companies today
