THE LAST GOVERNOR'S DEPARTURE When the Union Jack Came Down Jesselton, September 1963. The harbour was quiet, the tide was turning, and an era was drawing to a close. This cinematic historical song remembers the final departure of Sir William Goode, the last British Governor of North Borneo, as the Union Jack was lowered at Jesselton and the territory stood at the threshold of a new chapter. Contemporary accounts describe the Governor boarding HMS Lion as the British flag came down, marking one of the final moments of the colonial administration. On 16 September 1963, North Borneo became Sabah within the newly formed Federation of Malaysia, alongside Malaya, Sarawak and Singapore. The transition followed the establishment of Sabah's new state constitution and internal self-government on 31 August 1963. This song is not a story of battle. No cannon fired. No army marched. No kingdom fell in war. It is a song about a flag being lowered, a Governor sailing away, and a people standing at the edge of an uncertain future. The lyrics also remember the Sabah leaders present during this historic transition, including Donald Stephens and Tun Mustapha, while the Dusun verse reflects on the passing of time, remembrance, and the beginning of a new chapter. For The North Borneo Chronicles, this is a memory of Jesselton before it became Kota Kinabalu, and of the quiet morning when history changed with the turning tide. Remembering the Past • Honouring the Courage • Inspiring the Future Historical note: The song is a cinematic interpretation of historical events. Some scenes and imagery are artistic reconstructions created to evoke the atmosphere of Jesselton in 1963. #TheNorthBorneoChronicles #TheLastGovernorsDeparture #NorthBorneo #SabahHistory #Jesselton #KotaKinabalu #MalaysiaDay #September1963 #BritishNorthBorneo #WilliamGoode #Sabah #BorneoHistory #NorthBorneoHistory #SabahHeritage #HistoricalMusic #CinematicHistory
