What does permission mean when you were born to parents who'd already broken every rule in the book, doctors doing pro bono work in rural India, "subjecting their children to rural life". Arundhati Sridhar grew up in a structure that was already outside permissible bounds. In this conversation, she traces the thread from her grandmother's twilight years, finally discovering what food she liked, where she wanted to travel, to her own life as a feminist movement-builder, facilitator, and researcher asking why, rather: why not? why should I seek permission? We talk about permission as a cultural structure, what it means to hold a room right, and the cross-generational friendship that drove home what it means to stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.
