String Quartet op24 for Brass Quintet-Karl Shumann
Karl Schumann (March 29, 1835 – November 1, 1910) was a late Romantic-era German composer. His absence of biographical data is typical for minor composers whose works survive mainly through archival sheet music rather than historical accounts. Although sharing a common name, Robert Schumann appears to be of no relation. The presence of multiple string quartets suggests Karl was active during the period when chamber music was central to German musical life—roughly the mid 19th century. Perhaps a contemporary of, but distinct from Robert Schumann’s career.
He is also documented under the alternative name Carl Gottlob Schumann.
His music was published by Vieweg, a firm in Quedlinburg, Germany- a small, historic town in Sachsen-Anhalt. It published a large quantity of piano music, solo songs, and choral works into the 20th century.
Karl Schumann’s relationship to the publisher is most notably preserved through his chamber music scores.
IMSLP (International Music Score Library Project) lists 4 pieces by Karl Schumann : Sommerlust, Op.17 for 3 violins and piano, and three String Quartets-Op. 20, Op. 24 and Op. 25.
The Op. 24’s title page presents; String Quartet in G major, Op. 24 "for aspiring quartet players".
I discovered this piece many years ago and thought it to be a good fit for a brass quintet transcription.
It is a 4-movement work and transposed to F major. There are featured moments for each instrument.
The sweeping melodies are both fun to play, and enjoyable for an audience.
Performance time with repeats in 12 minutes.
