The TERRIFYING Last 30 Days Every Vietnam River Boat Crew Faced
Every sailor on the rivers of Vietnam had a date on a calendar, and every one of them believed the same thing: that the last month was the most dangerous of all. On the night of May 23rd, 1967, a yeoman of River Patrol Section 531 changed his mind at the door and stayed behind. At dawn the next morning, PBR 101 was ambushed on the Ham Luong River. Four men were killed. One of them had been in Vietnam for two weeks.
Counting down from day 30 to the wake up, this is the story of the men who crewed the PBRs of Task Force 116 and the armored boats of the Mobile Riverine Force. It covers the patrols that drifted with their engines off in the dark, the slow columns that went back into the kill zone at the Rach Ba Rai, Rocket Alley, Giant Slingshot and the Vam Co Dong, the sailors who hid their wounds so they would not be sent home, and the last boats handed over to the South Vietnamese Navy in 1969.
At the end, you will see what the records of these boats actually say about the last 30 days, and who the danger finally belonged to.
If you served on the boats, or someone in your family did, tell us in the comments his name, his boat, his river, his year, and how many days he had left.
