The Graham County Railroad was a short freight hauler in the southwest of North Carolina, also known as the Great Smokies. The railroad started in Robbinsville and ran through Tulula Creek down to the Southern Railways Murphy Branch.
The railroad was constructed in the eraly 1900th by using the old Bemis Lumber logging railroad equipment, since the Southern didn't build a sub branch from the Murphy Branch to Robbinsville. The Railroad operated into the mid 1970th, mostly with Shay locomotives.
My N-scale home layout "Railroads in the Great Smokies" features both, the Southern Railways Murphy Branch and the Graham County Railroad. This video is dedicated to the GCRR and it's operation. There's another video on Youtube showing operations along the Nantahala Valley - • Another day at Nantahala Valley
In the morning, the crew makes Shay #1925 ready for work by coaling and taking water in front of the engine shed. Next the outbound cars are switched to create the outbound consist for the ride down to the Southern interchange. Southerns early freight train to Topton placed some cars at the interchange track, headed for Robbinsville. The Shay crew exchanges the cars by using the small yard near by. Back in Robbinsville, the inbound cars are switched to their destinations and the loco will return to the engine shed for the next day.
