factories and mechanical clocks that divided the day into measurable working hours. Finally, modern technology promised to save us enormous amounts of time — while also making it possible to produce, consume, communicate, and work more than ever before.
This is not an argument that hunter-gatherers had perfect lives or that civilization was a mistake. Ancient life involved disease, injury, food uncertainty, high child mortality, and dangers that modern technology has dramatically reduced.
Instead, this video explores a deeper question about human history:
How did we go from working according to immediate needs and natural rhythms to organizing almost every part of life around clocks, schedules, deadlines, productivity, and economic growth?
Humanity invented machines to move faster, cook faster, communicate faster, calculate faster, and produce more in every hour.
They worked.
So if technology has saved us so much time… why don't we feel like we own the time it saved?
